Autism Awareness Program

OVERVIEW:

The Mount Laurel Police Department is now offering Autism Awareness Identification stickers. Residents can display a Mount Laurel Police Department Autism Awareness sticker on their car or home to alert responding officers and emergency personnel that an Autistic person may be present. Research shows that persons with autism and other developmental disabilities are more likely to encounter law enforcement than the general population. The actions or reactions by people with autism can be misinterpreted by first responders.

The badge will represent the complexity of the Autism spectrum and our dedication to providing advanced support to the Autism community. Our officers have already been trained in basic Autism Awareness and this badge will only help responding officers quickly identify signs and symptoms. Please help us to better serve our community.

CITIZEN POLICE ACADEMY

Mount Laurel Police Department’s Citizen Police Academy

The goal of the academy is to provide a learning environment for our residents so they can gain a better understanding of our agency. The police department would like to foster a transparent environment through hands-on learning and observation. Participants will learn from experienced officers and detectives as they familiarize themselves with patrol operations, community oriented policing, K-9 functions, motor vehicle laws and prosecution. They will also have the opportunity to experience a ride along and utilize a firearms simulator.

The citizen’s academy is designed to educate the participants on the structure, activities and daily functions of the police department. The Mount Laurel Police Department would like to create more informed citizens and open the lines of communication between civilians and officers.
