Police Chief Joseph Lehmann, Jr. retires
The Mount Laurel Police Department announces the retirement of Chief Joseph Lehmann, Jr.
Chief Joseph Lehmann, Jr. joined the Mount Laurel Police Department in September of 1987 after serving with Pemberton Township Police Department. Chief Lehmann served in the Patrol Bureau from 1987 through 1994 when he was transferred to Services Division where he was instrumental in the implementation of several technology projects, both with the County and the Department. One of these projects involved the evaluation and selection of a software program for the Burlington County Law Enforcement Computer System. This brought information technology to the fingertips of officers in their patrol vehicles throughout the county. Chief Lehmann’s efforts also allowed the Mount Laurel Police Department to be the first in the county to utilize the new mobile field reporting system that allowed officers to complete their reports without having to leave their vehicle.
Chief Lehmann was promoted to Lieutenant in November 2000 and assigned as the Services Division Commander. During his tenure as Division Commander, he oversaw the administrative functions, budget, fleet management and information technology system for the Department until his promotion to the position of Chief of Police on January 30, 2008.
As Chief of Police, Chief Lehmann designed and oversaw a significant restructuring of the police department with emphasis on placing more uniformed officers on patrol and a watch commander program to provide an increased level of supervision and command personnel around the clock. He led a collective effort between the department command staff, police bargaining units and township administration, which ultimately was approved by the governing body.
Chief Lehmann is a graduate of the West Command and Leadership Program; a Certified Public Manager through the State of New Jersey; and a Level 2 Fire Service Instructor. During his career he has been recognized for his accomplishments, both personally and professionally, to include but certainly not limited too, four Departmental Letters of Commendation; Mount Laurel Police Department Supervisor of the Year; three different Life Saving Awards from his work within the Law Enforcement, Fire, Emergency Medical Services; two Awards for Valor from the NJ State Fire Chiefs Association; the Burlington County Times newspaper as one of the twelve residents of Burlington County for “Making a Difference” in 2004.
The Mount Laurel Police Department and the Mount Laurel Community wish to thank Chief Lehmann for his dedicated and tireless service to the community.
